Kilims

Did you know that kilim is the Turkish word for carpet and that the flat-woven carpet originated in Iran, Afghanistan and the Caucasus region?
It has been made for centuries by nomadic women on small looms. And because the kilim is not as heavy and compact as an Afghan rug, for example, it is often used as a seat mat, saddle blanket, wall decoration, door hanging or floor rug. The kilim is a truly versatile home accessory.

The kilim inspires with its patterns and ease of care

The demand for a kilim has increased greatly in recent years. But that's not surprising, because anyone who has had the pleasure of calling a flatweave their own appreciates its many advantages.

On the one hand, the patterns and colours of these rugs are inspiring and are a perfect home textile to emphasise the modern ethnic look.
On the other hand, one immediately recognises the high-quality craftsmanship, where wool has been woven in many variations.
And wool is another important advantage of the kilim; because wool is naturally dirt-resistant, moreover, the smooth surface and the tight weave in the kilim prevent dirt and dust from settling. A kilim is extremely durable and can be used on both sides, which further extends the life of the kilim. A kilim is easy to clean with a hoover or, due to its relatively light weight, it can also be shaken out. A dream for every housewife!

Patterns and weaves

As you can already see in our assortment, we offer kilims in various patterns and weaves.

An Afghan kilim for example, looks completely different from an Indian Kilim.

However, a kilim always consists of a warp and a weft thread, which are processed in different ways. The kilim pattern is always created by the coloured weft material.

Which kilim you finally choose is purely a matter of taste. But you can be sure that you will enjoy the kilim of your choice from our Teppich Kontor for a long time.
